Name: Steven Cleland.
Job Title: Sales Director – Reconditioned Business Unit.
How long have you worked at Scott Pallets? It will be 3 years in July 2025.
How would you explain your job to people outside of the company? In layman’s terms, I’m responsible for all reconditioned pallet sales at Scott Pallets. From the small house accounts through to our key accounts, who can purchase over 1 million pallets per year.
How did you get into your role? I was initially employed as Sales Team Manager, progressing to Sales Manager, and now Sales Director
Walk us through a typical day at work: My role as Sales Director is highly dynamic and can vary significantly from day to day. However, I always start each morning by reviewing our sales performance against budget targets to stay closely aligned with our overall goals. From there, my day can take many different directions, depending on the priorities and challenges that arise.
While there isn’t a “typical” working day, my core responsibilities remain consistent. I manage a team of seven direct reports, making key decisions that impact not only their individual performance but also the overall direction of the sales department. A large part of my focus is on leading and supporting the sales team, ensuring performance is on track, identifying areas for development, and helping the team overcome obstacles to success.
Strategic planning and project management are also fundamental aspects of my role. I work on initiatives designed to drive growth, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen our market position. This involves close collaboration with other departments and senior leadership to ensure alignment with broader business objectives.
Another critical part of my role is overseeing and approving our pricing structures, ensuring they are competitive while protecting profitability.
I also oversee the management of one of our largest and most strategic customer accounts, maintaining strong relationships, negotiating terms, and ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction.
Overall, my position requires a balance between strategic leadership, hands-on management, and responsive problem-solving, adapting to the ever-changing needs of the business and our customers.
What was your first paying job? Entertainer and baggage handler at Prestwick Airport
What do you like to do outside of work? I’ve been involved in sport for as long as I can remember. I play football on Saturdays as the number 1 choice goalkeeper. I also go to my gym 3 or 4 times per week
Do you have any pets? Not at the moment, I previously had two dogs who meant a great deal to me. Although I haven’t yet found the heart to welcome new ones, they remain an important part of my story.
Are you a sports fan? Who are your favourite teams? Yes, I’ve been a fan of Rangers FC since my dad told me who he supported.
Where do you see yourself progressing within Scott Pallets/and or wider group businesses? I recently moved into the role of Sales Director after progressing within the group. With the scale and potential of this company, I know there are many exciting opportunities ahead. Right now, my focus is on establishing a strong foundation in my new position, continuing to drive success for the team, and seeing where the future leads
